Built to industrialise stellarator fusion power plants

Gauss Fusion is a European fusion start-up founded by physicist and industrial entrepreneur Dr. Frank H. Laukien in 2022 to industrialise stellarator fusion. Dr. Frank H. Laukien is President and CEO of Bruker, whose activities include superconducting materials and magnet technologies used in advanced scientific and industrial applications.

The company was created to bring together fusion science, systems engineering and industrial engineering capability within a focused start-up. Gauss Fusion is developing the GIGA™ power-plant platform, critical technologies and industrial capabilities required to progress stellarator fusion towards future deployment.

Gauss Fusion works with European high-tech companies, industrial partners, technology providers and research institutions able to contribute specialist expertise, manufacturing capability and other resources to that programme.


From scientific progress to industrial execution

Gauss Fusion brings together experience developed across major fusion research institutions, facilities and programmes.

Across the team and advisory network, this includes experience from the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics (IPP), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Forschungszentrum Jülich, Wendelstein 7-X, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, ITER, UKAEA, EUROfusion and Fusion for Energy.

This depth of experience spans stellarator physics, superconducting magnets, materials, tritium technologies, plasma-facing systems and the engineering requirements of future fusion power plants.

Coordinated engineering

Fusion systems cannot be developed independently. Requirements and interfaces need to be considered together so that engineering decisions can be managed in the context of the complete power plant.

Designed for industrial reality

A viable power plant must account for how major systems can be manufactured, assembled, operated, accessed, maintained and replaced - not only how they perform technically.

Building evidence in stages

Different technologies mature at different rates. Gauss Fusion advances them through design, modelling, prototyping, testing and staged industrial demonstration to build evidence towards larger-scale integration.

Gauss Fusion begins with the complete power plant. Its GIGA™ platform defines the principal plant requirements, system interfaces and technology priorities that guide the wider development programme.
This system-level approach allows individual technologies to be assessed not only on their technical performance, but also on how they affect manufacture, assembly, operation, maintenance, licensing and the economics of a future plant.
