Gauss Fusion Announces Appointment of Dr. Uwe Bau as Chief Executive Officer
- Dr. Uwe Bau appointed as Gauss Fusion Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and as a Managing Director of Gauss Fusion GmbH
- Chief Corporate Development Officer, Abraham Taherivand also appointed as a Managing Director; Gauss Founder Frank Laukien returns to Executive Chair role
- Gauss Fusion announces its evolved strategy and updated industrial fusion roadmap with advanced high-field Stellarator design, proprietary Demountable Mitchell Magnets (DMM™), modular HEXA™ breeding blanket and fuel cycle, highTRL 170 GHz ECRH plasma heating, and novel divertor technologies
- For rapid industrialization, Gauss technologies are modular and scalable by design, and evolved through Gauss Fusion’s rigorous systems engineering for TRL-maturation, technical, schedule and budget risk management
- In view of the surmountable, but significant technical challenges of controlled fusion energy, Gauss is focused on unique fusion power plant designs that work – with decades of lifetime operations and maintainability by design
Gauss Fusion, the deep- and green-tech company founded in 2022 to industrialize fusion and build commercial fusion power plants in Germany, Europe and globally, is pleased to announce its new leadership structure, and to release its evolved strategy and fusion energy industrialization roadmap. Dr. Uwe Bau has been appointed as the new Gauss Fusion Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective immediately. Moreover, Dr. Bau and Chief Corporate Development Officer, Abraham Taherivand have been appointed as Managing Directors (Geschäftsführer) of Gauss Fusion GmbH, located in Garching, Germany. Gauss Founder Dr. Frank Laukien has returned to his role as Executive Chair of the Board, where he is joined by Vice Chair Dr. Michael Peiniger.
Dr. Uwe Bau brings an exceptional combination of strategic, technical, industrial engineering and profitable growth business experience to Gauss Fusion. Uwe holds an engineering doctorate from RWTH Aachen, Germany. He researched advanced energy systems at Forschungszentrum Jülich, before joining McKinsey & Company in energy business consulting. Uwe joins Gauss Fusion from RI Research Instruments, where he was Business Section Head for Semicon OEM Technologies, also with responsibility for corporate strategy, digitalization and new ventures.
The new Gauss Fusion leadership structure has been implemented following the successful completion of the integrated Conceptual Design Report (CDR) for the Gauss GIGA™ fusion power platform, and the rapid development of unique, proprietary fusion core technologies. The CDR established the system-level foundation, defining the principal architecture, interfaces and critical technology developments to progress towards engineering, test, technology maturation and industrially relevant validation for fusion power plants (FPPs).
Building on this differentiated foundation, Gauss Fusion is advancing its proprietary fusion technologies: advanced high-field Stellarator design, Demountable Mitchell Magnets (DMM™), HEXA™ tritium breeding and fuel cycle, high-TRL 170 GHz ECHR plasma heating, and novel divertor technology. These critical fusioneering technologies address key industrialization aspects of how fusion power plants can be manufactured, installed, operated and maintained. Development, testing and TRL maturation of these core technologies support a disciplined and phased approach to industrial demonstration, as Gauss advances towards a first-of-a-kind (FOAK) fusion power plant.
Dr. Frank H. Laukien, Founder and Executive Chair of Gauss Fusion, commented:
“Gauss has completed its strategy review, roadmap evolution and leadership transition. I am delighted to welcome Dr. Uwe Bau as our new CEO. Together with our excellent executive and technical leadership, Gauss now pursues the next phase of our unique fusion technology development and performance validation, TRL-maturation and industrial demonstration.”
Dr. Uwe Bau, Chief Executive Officer and a Managing Director of Gauss Fusion, said:
“Gauss Fusion has a clear strategy, unique fusion technologies and a credible roadmap, and is now focused on performance validation and milestone delivery. Our priority is to build on the foundations of the CDR with disciplined execution across our proprietary technologies, towards industrial demonstration, a first-of-a-kind, and commercial fusion power plants."
“Drawing on the wealth of technical, industrial and entrepreneurial expertise across the company, I am looking forward to engaging with strategic partners, investors, public institutions and the fusion ecosystem, as our journey advances to this next exciting phase towards realising fusion.”
