
Independent expert panel completes review of Gauss Fusion’s power plant conceptual design
- Independent Panel of senior European fusion and industry experts, chaired by Prof. Dr. Hartmut Zohm (Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, IPP), concludes review of Gauss Fusion’s Conceptual Design Report (CDR).
- Review comes following Gauss Fusion’s CDR being handed over to the German Government in October 2025.
- The CDR sets out a comprehensive and integrated basis for the development of Gauss Fusion’s GIGA power plant – Europe’s first and only comprehensive conceptual design for a commercial fusion power plant.
- Gauss Fusion transitions from its conceptual design phase, to engineering phase right at the moment when German Chancellor Merz has publicly stated his ambition to see the world’s first fusion power plant built in Germany.
Gauss Fusion, the European Greentech company founded to build the continent’s first commercial fusion power plant, today announced the completion of an independent expert review, as part of a structured external assessment of how its fusion power plant concept design has been developed.
Led by senior European fusion and industry experts and chaired by Prof. Dr. Hartmut Zohm (Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, IPP), the Review Panel assessed the coherence, integration and industrial logic of Gauss Fusion’s first full conceptual design for a commercial fusion power plant. The Review Panel’s written report is being finalised and is expected to be completed before the end of January.
Examining the CDR against the engineering definition of a conceptual design phase – covering overall architecture, system interfaces, and credible conceptual solutions for major subsystems – the Review Panel recognised the value of Gauss Fusion’s plant-level perspective; its approach to developing a holistic view of the full power plant; and its application of a systems-engineering mindset consistent with industrial delivery.
The conclusion of this review comes at a critical time for both Germany and Europe – a moment when decisive action is needed to move fusion from ambition to industrial execution. For policymakers at all levels, the test will be whether structures are set up to enable first-of-a-kind power plant delivery. This will be determined by what policy frameworks emerge; how responsibilities between public authorities and industry are assigned; and the pace at which decisions are taken. Gauss Fusion’s independently reviewed, integrated conceptual design is a necessary foundation for that shift.
As the company looks ahead, the completion of this CDR review marks a clear transition for Gauss Fusion as it enters the engineering phase of its programme. This next phase will focus on detailed engineering work – including deepening design maturity, validating critical assumptions, targeted prototyping and qualification, strengthening system integration, and refining delivery pathways alongside industrial partners.
